ALEX KATZ
In reaction to Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s, the New York School painter Alex Katz established his highly stylized style, seeking his own distinctive compromise between formalism and representation. His brightly colored figurative and landscape paintings are made in a flat style that takes hints from popular visual culture such as advertisement and film, reflecting both Pop Art’s formal and conceptual issues in many respects. Well known for his many portraits of his wife and muse, Ada, Katz has also dedicated himself to printing and freestanding sculptures of wood or aluminum rendered cutout figures.
